Texas All State Band Students

The Hidalgo Early College HS Band Department would like to recognize five students for their outstanding efforts. These students are senior Jose Angel Aguilar, junior Engelbert Almanza, senior Jose Guadalupe Barrera, sophomore Ianelly Galan, and junior Suehay Rios. Through rigorous auditions and contests these students were selected to participate at the Texas Music Educators Association convention/clinic in San Antonio as members of the ATSSB Texas All State Band. These students will spend three days rehearsing with other students from across the state and perform a concert on Saturday, February 13th. Being an All State musician is the highest honor that an individual high school musician can achieve. Only the best of the best are selected and Hidalgo is home to five of them.

Jose Angel Aguilar is a senior clarinet student at Hidalgo ECHS and is a three year member of the All State Band. Angel is the son of Jose and Velma Aguilar. Angel has been an inspiration to all of the clarinet students here in Hidalgo. His clarinet instructor is Mr. Rafael Tinoco. Jose Angel will be awarded a $500 scholarship at the TMEA Convention for his three year participation as a Texas All State Band student. Jose Angel is planning to attend Texas State University in San Marcos.

Engelbert Almanza is a junior trombone student at Hidalgo ECHS and is a two year member of the All State Band. Engelbert is the son of Engelbert Almanza and Ileana Hernandez. Engelbert’s trombone instructor is Mr. Jorge Lozano. Engelbert leads by example and is also a member of the Genesis Drum and Bugle Corps.

Jose Guadalupe Barrera is a senior percussion student at Hidalgo ECHS and has been selected 1st chair drummer for the Texas All State Jazz Ensemble for all four years of high school. This is the first time in Texas All State Jazz history where one student has earned first chair honors for four straight years. Jose is the son of Jose Guadalupe and Blanca Maribel Barrera. Jose has earned many awards and accolades while in here at Hidalgo ECHS having earned UIL Gold medals at state UIL contest the last three years and will be awarded a $2000 scholarship at the TMEA Convention for his four year participation as a member of the Texas All State Band. Jose will be attending the University of North Texas next year.

Ianelly Galan is a sophomore flute student at Hidalgo ECHS and is a two year member of the All State Band. Ianelly is the daughter of Yadira and Miguel Galan. Ianelly’s flute teacher is Ms. Julie Wilson. Ianelly is a UIL Gold Medalist at the Texas State Solo Contest.

Suehay Rios is a junior trumpet student at Hidalgo ECHS and is a first time member of the All State Band. Suehay is the daughter of Gumaro and Rita Rios. Suehay’s trumpet teachers include Miss Michelle Glasscock and her father and brother who are also trumpet players. Suehay is a UIL Silver Medalist at the Texas State Solo Contest.

The Hidalgo Early College HS Band department is extremely proud of these five young musicians. They are amongst the best musicians in the state of Texas and have represented our school, community, and district at the highest level. Congratulations to all of them and their families for this tremendous accomplishment. We all look forward to many more great musical achievements from them.

All State Band Students

Members of the Pirate Band recently auditioned and 19 students earned a chair in the All Region Band. Of those 19 students 12 Hidalgo ECHS band students advanced and competed at the Area Band tryouts in Orange Grove this past Saturday. They are:

Sophomores Ianelly Galan (Flute), Martin Marizcal (Percussion), Rebecca Moore (Clarinet), Eladio Nunez (French Horn), Juan Ochoa (Trombone)
Juniors Engelbert Almanza (Trombone), Hebert Camacho (Trombone), Ellio Lumbreras (Trumpet), Ofelia Resendiz (Clarinet), Suehay Rios (Trumpet)

From the twelve students auditioning 4 advanced and earned a chair in the Texas All State Band. They are:

Ianelly Galan (Flute), Jose Angel Aguilar (Clarinet), Suehay Rios (Trumpet), Engelbert Almanza (Trombone), and Jose Barrera had already earned 1st chair All State Jazz Band.

This gives Hidalgo ECHS 5 students in the Texas All State Band! Congratulations to all of the students, parents, and directors for a job well done. These students will be performing with the Texas All State Band at the TMEA Conference from February 10th – 13th in San Antonio.
